A View to a Car – Office Tomitaku S30 Z

An oldie, but an absolute goody.

What I enjoy most from an engine is the last couple-thousand RPMs in its rev range, and the immediate application of the throttle after an upshift. Often I’ll find myself downshifting in traffic, or holding onto a gear a little longer just to experience it. It’s the induction noise that gets me, and there’s a lot of it here.

While everyone loves an S30, the star of this video is the L-series inline-six with the OS Giken TC24-B1 head. The original L-series motors were reverse flow, with the exhaust and carbs on the same side, along with a single camshaft and two valves per cylinder. The OS Giken head bestowed the Nissan motor with a crossflow design incorporating four valves per cylinder and twin cams. Add to that, triple dual-throat carbs and an exhaust header that should be labeled NSFW, and you have one of the most attractive assemblies to ever hide under a bonnet.

The video packs the best parts in the beginning, and good headphones are a must. As a lover of all things intake noise, it’s a favorite I keep coming back to again and again.

OS Giken actually did a re-release of the head and complimentary components a few years ago. Z Car Garage, a local shop, got their hands on one and put a car together for SEMA back in 2015.

One of these days I’ll make a visit, if only to take a shot at getting an earful of this wonderful motor. Beside that, I’ll keep stacking my pennies for the day I get to slot something that sounds this good into something of my own!
